Chapter 12: The Winds of Fate
The sun hung low on the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, as the Griffon Matriarch alighted in a small clearing. Her massive wings stirred up a gentle breeze, ruffling the leaves of the surrounding trees. The group slid from her back, their hearts filled with a mixture of joy and trepidation.
Before them, the Griffon offspring scampered towards their mother, their tiny wings fluttering with excitement. The Matriarch lowered her great head, nuzzling each of her babies in turn, a deep, rumbling purr emanating from her throat.
Lyra, her eyes shining with emotion, turned to the others. "The Matriarch is grateful for our help. She has offered to fly us as close as she can to Malazar's dominion. From there, we'll have to continue on foot to reach Wraith Spiral Citadel."
Joren nodded, his face set with determination. "Then that's what we'll do. Antonius is counting on us. We can't let him down."
As the group climbed back onto the Matriarch's back, settling themselves between her powerful shoulders, a sense of foreboding settled over them. They were flying straight into the heart of the enemy's power, a place where Malazar's influence was at its strongest.
But they had no choice. Antonius needed them, and they would not abandon him, no matter the risk.
Far away, in the heart of the Elven court, Isindril stood before King Verdramir, her face grave. "My King, the situation is more dire than we feared. The Orcs have already begun to infiltrate our northern borders. They are laying the groundwork for a full-scale invasion by Malazar's forces."
The King's brow furrowed, his eyes darkening with worry. "And what of the Phoenix Warrior and his companions? Are they safe?"
Isindril nodded. "For now, yes. They are on their way to Wraith Spiral Citadel as we speak, to rescue Antonius."
The King's gaze sharpened, a flicker of anger passing over his face. "You aided them in their escape from the palace, Isindril. You defied my direct orders."
Isindril met his gaze steadily, her chin lifted in defiance. "I did what I believed was right, my King. They are our best hope of stopping Malazar. We cannot abandon them now."
The King sighed, his shoulders slumping. "I understand your reasons, Isindril. But you must understand the gravity of the situation. They are walking straight into Malazar's stronghold, where his power is greatest. If he finds them..."
He trailed off, the implication hanging heavy in the air.
Professor Silvia Froggenstale, who had been listening silently, stepped forward. "Then we must find a way to lure Malazar away from Wraith Spiral Citadel. Give the Phoenix Warrior and his friends a fighting chance to rescue Antonius and escape alive."
The King turned to her, his eyebrows raised. "And how do you propose we do that, Professor? Malazar is not easily fooled."
Froggenstale's eyes glinted with a cunning light. "We offer him what he wants most. The Phoenix Warrior himself."
Isindril's eyes widened. "You can't be serious. We can't hand Joren over to that monster!"
The King held up a hand, silencing her protest.
